Amar Abd El-Sallam

Photo of Amar I am a PhD Student at the Communications and Signal Processing Group (CSP), School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia.

I received my bachelor degree with honours from the Faculty of Enginerring, at Assiut University, Egypt in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Comunication devision, in 1995.

My Master's degree was awarded in 1998 from the same University and my research topic was " System Identification and Signal Separation Using Second and Higher order Statistics".

Topic

Low Order Channel Estimation For CDMA Systems

In wireless communications one encounters multi-path propagation which limits the performance of the system. For wideband systems such as Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA), the result of multi-path can be an impulse response with a duration significantly larger than the chip duration. Though, when considering the channel response as a long FIR filter, typically only a few coefficients are effectively non-zero, and the true channel is of a low order.

A receiver relying on information of the channel response, such as a RAKE receiver may suffer if the low order structure is not taken into account. It is then important to find efficient ways to identify low order estimates of the channel response. An aim of my research is to develop an approach which identifies the non-zero coefficients of the signal model. The level of confidence with which I will make this assertion may be controlled based on statistical measures. I will construct a multiple hypothesis test, for which the distribution of the test statistics will be estimated using the bootstrap.
